The Rolex Deepsea James Cameron Ref. 116660, also known as the D-Blue, was introduced in 2014 as a special edition of the Deepsea collection, celebrating filmmaker and explorer James Cameron’s successful 2012 Mariana Trench expedition, where he reached nearly 11,000 meters below sea level. Its standout feature is the iconic gradient D-Blue dial, which fades from blue to black, symbolizing the descent from ocean surface to the abyss, with the word “DEEPSEA” in vivid green, echoing the colour of Cameron’s submersible. Built for extreme underwater use, the 44mm Oystersteel case employs Rolex’s patented Ringlock System, enabling an extraordinary 3,900-meter (12,800-foot) depth rating, aided by a Helium Escape Valve to withstand saturation diving. At its heart is the Rolex Calibre 3135, a robust COSC-certified automatic movement with a Parachrom hairspring for improved resistance to shocks and magnetism, offering a 48-hour power reserve. Within Rolex’s lineup, the Deepsea occupies the apex of the brand’s professional dive watches, surpassing the Submariner and Sea-Dweller in technical depth capability, while the James Cameron edition uniquely ties Rolex’s engineering to a milestone in human exploration, making it one of the most distinctive and collectible modern Rolex references.
